Senior guard Marcus Barnes scored 11 of Northeastern's last 12 points and junior guard Jose Juan Barea became the school's all-time leader in three-pointers made as the Huskies edged Albany, 73-70, Sunday afternoon at the Recreation & Convocation Center.
Aquawasi St. Hillaire's reverse layup with 10:29 to play cut NU's lead to 47-45, but a barrage of Husky threes followed. Northeastern (7-6, 3-1) made six shots from long range -- three by Barea, two by Barnes and one by sophomore guard Bobby Kelly -- in the next six minutes to pull ahead, 67-56.
Jamar Wilson and Brian Lillis combined to score seven straight Albany points to make it 67-63 with 1:53 remaining. The last two came on a pair of Wilson free throws, the result of Barea's fifth foul. Barea had 17 points and tied a season high with nine assists.
Wilson was called for his fifth foul 17 seconds after Barea, leaving both teams without their starting point guards.
Barnes then made the biggest shot of the game, a long jumper with 1:10 to play that extended the Husky advantage to 69-63. He finished with a team-high 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
Barnes' foul shot with 39 seconds left upped Northeastern's bulge to 70-64, but consecutive layups by Lucious Jordan and St. Hillaire cut it to two with 24 seconds left. Jordan led all scorers with 22.
Sophomore Adrian Martinez made one of two free throws to extend the margin to 71-68, but Jordan made two foul shots with 7.7 seconds remaining to close it to one.
Barnes coolly hit two free throws with 6.9 seconds to play to increase the NU lead to 73-70, and Jordan's three-point attempt at the buzzer was long. The win was the Huskies' sixth straight over the Great Danes (6-7, 2-2).
Barea was 4-of-9 from three-point range, giving him 153 career treys, which moves him past Lamont Hough (1989-92) and into the top spot on NU's charts. The record-breaking three came with 9:18 showing on the clock.
This is the second milestone Barea has reached in as many trips to Albany. On Feb. 29, 2004, he scored his 1,000th career point in Northeastern's 80-62 win at the RACC.
The Huskies shot a season-high 51 percent (28-for-55) from the floor, including a sizzling 64 percent (14-for-22) in the second half. They were also effective from three-point range, especially in the game's final 20 minutes, when they went 6-for-9 from behind the arc.
With Northeastern leading 5-2, Wilson led Albany on an 11-2 run to open up a 13-7 lead with 13:15 left in the first. Wilson had six points in that stretch.
NU responded by scoring 25 of the next 29 points to go up 32-17 with 4:23 to go in the first. Seven different Huskies contributed baskets in that run.
The Great Danes closed the half on a 9-2 run to narrow the gap to 34-26.
Northeastern visits Hartford Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
