Dana Sensenig scored two second-half goals for Old Dominion as the Lady Monarchs handed the Northeastern field hockey team a 3-1 defeat on Friday at Sweeney Field.
"The positive we get to take out of this is that we really came out after them in the first half," said Northeastern head coach Cheryl Murtagh. "The problem was tactically, we didn't do things defensively and we let them back in the game."
The Huskies were first to score midway through the first half. Jay Quinn put a shot into the top of the net after a penalty corner to give NU the 1-0 lead. The Huskies were able to keep the Lady Monarchs off the board for the rest of the first half, fighting off several penalty corners, including one on which Husky keeper Colleen Duffy made two saves from point-blank range off the stick of Shannon Mobley.
Midway through the second half, ODU turned the tide with three straight goals. Anna Rogers slipped one into the goal in the 53rd minute to tie the game. Two minutes later, Sensenig gave the Lady Monarchs the lead, scoring on a pass from Denise Admiraal. In the 59th minute, Admiraal connected with Sensenig again to give Old Dominion the 3-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
The Lady Monarchs outshot the Huskies, 17-10. Duffy had a strong game in goal for the Huskies, making a career-best nine saves despite allowing three goals.
The Huskies play their final home game of the regular season on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., hosting William & Mary at Sweeney Field. NU's two seniors, Lauren Edelmeier and Jay Quinn, will be honored and former Husky goalkeeper Diana Nelson, now a member of the United States national team, will be on hand.
