Northeastern lost another heartbreaker on Friday, as UNC Wilmington came away with the 2-1 overtime victory in North Carolina. Junior forward Kristin Kowalik scored Northeastern's single goal, but sophomore midfielder Jenny Cauble's two scores proved to be the difference. Northeastern is now 5-10-1 on the season with a 2-6-0 CAA record. Wilmington improved to 7-9-0 and 3-5-0 as the season winds down.
It turned out to be a defensive battle as the two teams combined for just seven shots on goal. Last week's player of the week, junior goalie Mariel Wilner, stopped two of the Seahawks' four shots. Wilmington goalkeeper Rachael Wilson had two saves on NU's three shots to lower her goals against average to 1.54 on the year.
The game's first score came in the 18th minute as Cauble's shot from the right side slipped past Wilner. Justine Hammer collected her second assist of the year on the score.
Cauble's goal would be the last scoring activity of the period. The Huskies entered the locker room at the half trailing 1-0.
As the second period began Northeastern evened the score. Kowalik dropped in a shot over the goalie and into the net. Kowalik is now second on the team with five goals. Jessica Pfeifer provided the assist, her third of the 2005 season. The Huskies went on to outshoot Wilmington 5-3 in the second half, but the game remained tied. At the end of regulation the two squads were at a 1-1 stalemate.
The deciding period ended quickly when Jenny Cauble's second goal from the right side brought the game to a quick conclusion. She currently leads the Seahawks in scoring with seven goals.
Friday's game was Northeastern's sixth one goal loss of the season. The Huskies will be on the road once again this Sunday at 1 p.m. against Georgia State.
