The Huskies struggles continued Sunday as they lost another close game to Towson 2-1. Despite out-shooting the Tigers 19-7, Northeastern was unable to capitalize on its scoring opportunities and the team dropped its fifth straight game.
Towson senior Shannon Jackson put the Tigers ahead early with an unassisted goal in the 14th minute of play. The midfielder's corner kick curled towards the goal, then off the far post and into the net. It was her first goal of the season. Five minutes later, Towson scored the second goal of the game when Alison Reinhart's direct kick created the perfect scoring opportunity for junior Brittany Wilson. The defender's header slipped past NU goalie Mariel Wilner and into the right side of the goal. With her third goal of the season, Wilson is now the co-leading goal scorer for the Tigers.
Going into the half, the Huskies were down by two goals and seemed unable to take advantage of their scoring chances. However, NU found a ray of hope ten minutes into the second period when junior Kristin Kowalik rebounded off the goalie and blasted into the net. It was the second consecutive game that the forward has scored and her fourth goal of the season. Only freshman Caitlin Whelan has more, with six scores. Kowalik also had a game-high six shots.
Wilner made stopped two of the Tigers' four shots on goal and is now 3-8-1 this season. Sophomore Kendie Bauer is now 1-2-0 this season for Towson after a strong showing in which she saved eight of NU's nine shots.
Nonetheless, it was not enough to pull Northeastern out of the hole as the Huskies went on to lose 2-0. This is NU's worst losing streak since October 1999 when the team lost five straight to end the season.
Northeastern will get another shot at its first conference win this Friday when Old Dominion comes to Parsons Field. The team is 0-5-0 in CAA games and 3-9-1 overall. Friday's game begins at 6 p.m.
