Junior Bobby Kelly scored a career-high 23 points as Northeastern defeated Cal State Northridge 102-81 Friday night to advance to the finals of the Golden Bear Classic in Berkeley, Calif.
It was a record-setting night all around for the Huskies, as sophomore Shawn James tied Husky legend Reggie Lewis for the school's all-time lead in blocked shots. In his first two years at NU, James now has 155 career blocks. Northeastern also set the Golden Bear Classic record for most points scored (102) and tied the record for most team blocks (eight). Senior Janon Cole also matched a personal record, as he tied his career-high in scoring with a 14-point effort to lead the Huskies to their best start (4-0) since the 1981-82 season.
Trailing 12-10 with just under 15 minutes to play in the opening half, Northeastern went on a 9-0 run on threes by senior Jose Juan Barea and two from Kelly. An 8-0 run starting at the 10:40 mark, gave the Huskies a 16-point advantage at 35-19.
The Matadors (2-1) closed their deficit to just four points before the half on a tip-in by junior Austin Waggener with 0:23 remaining, but junior Adrian Martinez nailed a three with five seconds remaining to give NU a 46-39 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Huskies shot a blistering 60.6 percent on 20 of 33 shooting en route to their second consecutive 100-point contest. A 12-2 Husky-run beginning at the 12:55 mark of the second gave NU a 71-52 lead to put the game out of reach for the Matadors. James, who scored just a pair of points in the first half, turned in a 12-point second half performance, as well as his three blocks.
Barea finished the night with 19 points and nine assists, as he converted eight of 10 free throw attempts. Overall, five Huskies reached double figures, as senior Aaron Davis turned in 12 points on five of six shooting from the floor. Martinez also played strong, scoring five points and dishing five assists.
Junior Mike Efevberha led Northridge with 23 points, while junior Thomas Shewmake scored 13 and grabbed a game-high 16 total rebounds. The Matadors shot 38.6 percent from the floor, but outrebounded Northeastern by a 45-37 margin.
