Northeastern 3, Hofstra 2

Whitney Shean scored a hat trick for the Huskies to lead the Northeastern field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over third-seeded Hofstra on Saturday in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals in Norfolk, Va.

"I knew it would be a tough game," said Northeastern field hockey coach Cheryl Murtagh. "It was great to see everyone really step it up."

The first half was a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair. The Huskies struck first at 8:43 when Shean deposited a rebound in the net to put the Huskies up 1-0. The Pride quickly got the goal back, though, when Pemba Ramdoo scored at 11:52 to tie the game at one goal each. Shean struck again for the Huskies at 17:33 to give NU another lead, but Hofstra evened the score once more when Kara McEneaney tallied a goal at 29:34, converting on a penalty corner.

The score remained deadlocked at 2-2 until 51:35, when Shean deflected a shot from Ashley D'Ambra into the net for her third goal of the game to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead that would hold up for the rest of the afternoon.

The Huskies were outshot by the Pride, 11-10, in the game. NU goalkeeper Colleen Duffy made five saves, while Jessica Cowperthwait made four saves in net for the Pride.

The Huskies now advance to the CAA championship game to face the top-seeded Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion, ranked No. 4 in the country. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Norfolk, Va. The winner of the CAA crown receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
