Old Dominion goalkeeper Mary Cate Gordon recorded a shutout as the Lady Monarchs handed the Northeastern field hockey team a 3-0 defeat in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Game on Sunday in Norfolk, Va.
The Lady Monarchs came out strong in the first half. ODU got on the board with an unassisted goal from Anna Rogers at 13:20. The Lady Monarchs increased their lead at 24:10 when Darcy Pinchbeck set up Sami McLenegan's goal to give ODU the 2-0 lead. The Huskies had a chance on a penalty corner in the closing minutes of the first half, but the shot was lifted to high and the score remained 2-0 through halftime.
The Lady Monarchs added another goal at 55:35 when Pinchbeck took a rebound and sent it to Katelyn Smither, who fired it into the net for the 3-0 lead that would hold up to the end of the game.
Old Dominion outshot the Huskies, 18-7, in the game. Gordon made six saves for the Lady Monarchs, while NU keeper Colleen Duffy made eight saves.
Back Lauren Edelmeier, forward Whitney Shean and forward Ashley Bascetta were named to the CAA All-Tournament team.
The Lady Monarchs claim their 13th CAA championship and receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies now stand at 16-6; their season will continue only if they are selected for one of eight at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament, which will be announced on Tuesday.
