DaShaun Wood scored 23 points, while Jordan Pleiman notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Wright State to a 72-65 non-conference victory over Northeastern on Tuesday night at the Nutter Center.
With a 46-45 lead at 13:03 in the second half, the Raiders (4-5) went on a 13-2 run to build a 59-47 lead at the 6:49 mark. Wright State would lead by as many as 13 points during the second half, while Northeastern (6-3) managed to cut its deficit to just five with 0:18 seconds remaining. However, the Raiders used a strong defensive effort to hold the Huskies to just 40.4 percent shooting on the night and 5-of-24 on 3-pointers, sending them to their second consecutive defeat.
Wood also recorded nine assists and seven rebounds to go with his game-high 23 points, while Drew Burleson scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds on the night for Wright State. Jose Juan Barea led the Huskies with a 20-point effort along with six rebounds and six assists and Bobby Kelly converted 5-of-8 shots for 12 points and seven rebounds. Shawn James registered seven of his eight blocked shots in the second half as he finished with eight points for NU.
Trailing by two with 7:01 to play in the first, Burleson led an 8-0 Raider run as he scored six to take a 24-18 lead with 5:19 to play in the first half. Entering the break, Wright State held on to that six-point margin, after shooting 55.6 percent from the floor on 15-of-27 shooting, while holding the Huskies to 11-of-30 for 36.7 percent, including just 1-of-9 from behind the arc. For WSU, Wood scored 12 first-half points, while Janon Cole led the Huskies with a 10-point effort in the opening 20 minutes.
The Huskies, who have struggled this season on the boards, outrebounded the Raiders 38-29, but committed 15 turnovers and matched their season high with 25 team fouls. Overall, four technical fouls were issued in the game, as Cole received one and the Husky bench collected two, while Walter Chancellor was issued one for Wright State.
Northeastern returns home Friday for the start of a three-game home stand, as it welcomes in-state rival Holy Cross to Solomon Court for a non-conference matchup beginning at 3 p.m.
