Northeastern 89, Towson 67

Senior Jose Juan Barea scored 27 points and collected 11 assists to lead Northeastern to an 89-67 victory over Towson in the Huskies' first CAA home game played in Matthews Arena Wednesday night.

The Huskies (6-1, 2-0 CAA) raced to a 13-0 lead in the game's opening 2:22, as Barea scored five and dished three assists to give Northeastern the early advantage. Barea, who leads the nation in assists, converted a layup at 3:43 to cap an 8-0 run over a three minute span to build the NU lead to 39-22, as the Huskies entered the break with a 15-point advantage. During the opening period, Northeastern shot a solid 57.1 percent on 16-of-28 shooting, while holding Towson to just 29.0 percent on nine-of-31 from the floor.

In the second half, junior Winstonn Tubbs nailed a jumper to close Towson's deficit to 13 (64-51) at 9:19, but that would be as close as the Tigers would draw, as the Huskies continued their hot shooting down the stretch.

Overall, Northeastern shot 52.6 percent, including an 11-of-27 (40.7 percent) effort from behind the arc. The league's top scoring and shooting offense, received standout performances from both Barea (nine-of-13) and junior Bobby Kelly, who converted four-of-five 3-pointers for 18 points on the night. Sophomore Shawn James scored 11 points, while adding eight blocks to his league lead and senior Janon Cole, coming off a career night last Saturday, was perfect on the evening. He shot four-for-four from the floor and converted all six from the free throw line for 14 points. The Huskies, who have struggled on the boards this season, outrebounded the Tigers 33-32, led by the 5'11 Barea who notched seven.

For Towson, junior Abraham Denard led the way with 16 points, while senior Lawrence Hamm and freshman Tim Crossin each chipped in with 15. Hamm also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

Northeastern is back in action on Tues., Dec. 20, as it travels to Providence, R.I. to take on the Providence Friars beginning at 7:30 p.m.
