Northeastern Huskies

Men's Basketball

Northeastern 85, UMBC 55

Northeastern had no problem with UMBC on Saturday afternoon, shooting a season-high 58.5 percent from the field in downing the Retrievers, 85-55, at the RAC Arena in Baltimore, Md.

The 30-point margin of victory is the Huskies' largest over a Div. I opponent since a 99-69 win over Loyola in 2002-03. It is their most lopsided conference win since a 96-58 victory over Boston University in 1992-93.

NU (15-8, 11-3 America East) came out smoking, hitting six of its first eight shots to open up a 17-3 lead. Senior guard Marcus Barnes was 3-for-3 from three-point range in that stretch. That comes after his 6-for-6 performance from beyond the arc in the first half of Northeastern's last game, against Hartford.

Andrew Feeley's bucket with 13:28 left in the half made it 17-7, but the Huskies answered with seven straight points to open a 24-7 lead. Junior guard Jose Juan Barea capped the run with a deep three-pointer.

After the Retrievers (9-14, 4-10) scored the next five points, NU put the game away with a 15-3 run, which increased its advantage to 39-15. Barnes had seven of those 15 points.

Northeastern took a 48-21 lead into the half. The 48 first-half points are a season high, while the 21 points allowed are the fewest the Huskies have surrendered in any half this year.

The Huskies shot 58.6 percent (17-for-29) in the first half compared to just 22.6 percent (7-for-31) for UMBC.

For the second consecutive game, Barnes finished the first half with 18 points. He was 7-for-10 from the field and 4-for-5 from long range in the initial stanza.

The second half was moot as head coach Ron Everhart substituted liberally. The Huskies held a 34-point lead at one juncture, while the closest UMBC got after the intermission was 24.

Barnes scored a game-high 22, while Barea had 21. He also added seven assists and six rebounds.

Freshman forward Shawn James went 8-for-8 from the field, tying him for the second-best shooting performance in school history. Glen Miller also went 8-for-8 against Vermont on Jan. 11, 1984. James also contributed seven blocks and six boards.

Northeastern returns home Wednesday, Feb. 16 to play Maine at 7 p.m.
