Junior guard Jose Juan Barea (17 points, 12 assists) and freshman forward Shawn James (10 points, 10 blocks) each recorded double-doubles in an 82-51 blowout win over Maine Wednesday night in front of 1,026 fans at Solomon Court. The win was the 150th of head coach Ron Everhart's career.
The Huskies (16-8, 12-3 America East) were in control of the game from the get-go, holding the Black Bears (11-13, 6-9) scoreless until 15:19 in the first half when
Chris Markwood hit a three-pointer.
Maine got within a point, 16-15, with 7:21 left in the half when Joe Campbell knocked down a jumper. The Huskies then used a 15-5 run, capped by a Barea three-pointer at 4:05, to pull away.
In the second half, Maine got as close as nine following a dunk by Olli Ahvenniemi with 17:54 to play. Northeastern dominated the rest of the way, outscoring the Black Bears 38-15 from that point on.
Northeastern forced 20 Maine turnovers, scoring 28 points off of them.
James' 10 blocks are one short of his school record. He now has 102 in his brief career, second most in program history.
Sophomore guard Bobby Kelly added 13 points, tying his career high. Junior guard Aaron Davis chipped in with 10 points, while sophomore forward Bennet Davis fell just shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Campbell and Mark Flavin led the Black Bears with 13 points each.
The Huskies will battle for second place in America East on Sunday, Feb. 20, when they meet Boston University at 4 p.m. at Agganis Arena. The game will be televised by NESN.
