Freshman Shawn James set career highs in both points (23) and rebounds (14), and junior guard Jose Juan Barea tied a career high with 14 assists as Northeastern took down Hartford, 86-66, Wednesday night in front of 1,058 fans at Solomon Court.
The Huskies (14-8, 10-3 America East) used an 11-0 run early in the second half to pull away from the Hawks (7-15, 3-10).
Hartford's Charles Ford nailed a three-pointer with 15:10 to go to cut NU's lead to 50-46. James then made a jumper, and sophomore Bobby Kelly threw down two breakaway dunks following steals by Barea to make it 56-46 with 13:54 left.
A James layup and three Barea free throws concluded the run, after which the Huskies led 61-46. The lead never dipped into single digits after that.
Barea scored 17 points, 15 of which came in the second half. His 14 assists tie his previous career best, which he set Feb. 14, 2004 against UMBC, and are one short of the school record, set by Bill Loughnane against Delaware on Dec. 29, 1977.
Senior Marcus Barnes chipped in 18 points, all in the first half and all on three-pointers. He went 6-for-10 from beyond the arc.
Bernard Lowndes led the Hawks with 22 points. Aaron Cook added 16 points, while Ford had 15.
Northeastern shot 50 percent (30-for-60) for the game, including 59 percent (17-for-29) in the second half. It out-rebounded Hartford, 42-33.
The Huskies go in search of another win Saturday, Feb. 12, when they meet UMBC in Baltimore, Md., at 1 p.m.
