The women's soccer team won its opener at Holy Cross, 3-2, on Friday in Worcester. This marks the second consecutive year the Huskies have won their opening game.
Holy Cross got the early lead after a goal from Meredith Davis in only the second minute of play.
Freshman forward Caitlin Whelan then scored the first two goals of her collegiate career. The first came on a pass from Kristen Blake in the fourth minute. She followed that up with an unassisted goal at the 29:30 minute mark.
Last year's leading scorer, senior Kristen Kowalik, scored a second half goal to put the Huskies up 3-1. Senior Jessica Pfeifer's assist on the goal was her first point of the season.
Allison Hayes scored a late unassisted goal, but it was not enough to salvage a win for the Crusaders, as Northeastern went on to win 3-2.
NU goalie Mariel Wilner had two saves on four shots. For Holy Cross, Cashel Scanlon allowed two goals and had seven saves while Jessica Pietrowicz gave up one goal and had five saves.
The Huskies will travel to Denver, CO next weekend for the University of Denver Tournament. They play Wyoming on Friday, Sept. 2.
