The Northeastern field hockey team won its first game of the season, beating Ohio 7-2 at Sweeney Field. Lauren Edelmeier scored a hat trick, while Natalie Singelais picked up three assists.
Ashley Webber scored the Huskies' first goal of the season at 3:26 to give Northeastern a 1-0 lead. Michaela O'Malley added another at 18:13. Ohio got on the board at 22:09 in the first when Estienne Coetzee scored on a pass from Lindsay Rothenberger to cut the NU lead to 2-1. The Huskies got the goal back three minutes later when Singelais set up Edelmeier for her first goal of the game at 25:17.
The Bobcats came out strong to start the second half, as Estienne Coetzee scored on a pass from Rachelle Coetzee to bring Ohio back within a goal. Sarah Eckhoff gave the Huskies some breathing room with a goal at 54:48 to make the score 4-2. Edelmeier then gave NU all they would need by scoring twice in the next ten minutes, notching her second goal of the game at 58:22 and her third at 63:03. Singelais assisted both goals, with Whitney Shean also being credited with an assist on the last goal, which was scored directly off a penalty corner. Ashley Bascetta closed out the scoring with a goal at 67:18 in her collegiate debut.
"The score is impressive, but we had two balls in the net and we let them back, then we had a third and let them back," Northeastern head coach Cheryl Murtagh said. "We definitely need to pick it up or as we get going in the season, teams are going to make us pay for that."
The win marks the fifth year in a row that the Huskies have won their season opener. NU's next game is Sunday, Aug. 28 against Indiana at Sweeney Field. Game time is 2 p.m.
