Ashley Webber scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Northeastern field hockey team beat the Boston University Terriers 3-2 on Friday at Sweeney Field.
The first half of the game was dominated by defense as the dominating backs in the game kept the contest scoreless. With just 20 seconds remaining before halftime, the Terriers finally broke the ice when Erin Calamari scored on a penalty corner from Sarah Shute and Colleen McClay.
In the second half, though, Jay Quinn provided all the offense the Huskies needed to stay in the game. She tied the game at 1-1 with a goal at 43:34, then put the Huskies ahead ten minutes later with her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Both of Quinn's goals were unassisted.
BU struck back at 61:35 when McClay set up Holly Wiles, who put a shot in the back of the net to knot the game at 2-2. The Huskies then several chances to win the game in regulation, but were unable to score on 11 penalty corners in the game.
The game went to a six-on-six, sudden-victory overtime session, but the Huskies needed less than two minutes to seal the deal when Lauren Edelmeier passed to a streaking Ashley Webber, who sent the ball past BU goalie Erin Prediger to give the Huskies the win.
"BU is a good team. We knew they would come ready to play and they did," Northeastern head coach Cheryl Murtagh said. "I'm just really proud of our team. For us to hang in there is just a tribute to our players and how hard they work every day."
The Huskies outshot the Terriers, 15-5, in the game. Colleen Duffy made her collegiate debut in goal for the Huskies and recorded the win, making one save.
The Huskies are in action again on Sunday at Sweeney Field when they host Princeton at 2 p.m.
