Northeastern Huskies

Women's Soccer

Ohio State 2, Northeastern 1

The Northeastern women's soccer team lost its second consecutive game on Sunday. The 2-1 loss to no. 20 Ohio State at the Harvard Invitational in Cambridge drops the Huskies' record below .500 once again. The team is now 3-4-0 on the season.

Ohio State scored its first goal in the nineteenth minute of play when Daniel Dietrich's header went in off a corner kick. Caitlin Colfer was credited with the assist.

Despite five shots on goal in the first half, Northeastern struggled to score throughout the period. The Huskies' offensive attack took a substantial hit when the team's leading scorer, freshman Caitlin Whelan, severely rolled her ankle part way through the first period. She spent the rest of the first half and much of the second on the bench with her ankle wrapped in ice. However, she did return to finish the game.

Northeastern busted out of the gate following intermission, scoring its first goal five minutes in to the second period. The score came on a corner kick that was deflected into the goal by an OSU defender. Freshman Brenna Matthews was the last Husky to touch the ball and therefore credited with NU's lone goal. Kristin Kowalik also got her second assist of the season on the score.

The game began to intensify as time ticked away in the 1-1 tie; neither team able to pull ahead. Lisa Collison, OSU's leading scorer, pulled the Buckeyes out of a dead heat when she scored the game winner with only five minutes left on the clock. The freshman forward stole the ball from two Husky defenders and knocked it past Wilner for her fifth goal of the season.

The 2-1 lead was nearly increased when NU goalie Mariel Wilner was called out on a foul in the box late in the game. OSU was granted a penalty shot that went high. It was Wilner's second such foul in the last two games.

Despite a few late scoring chances, the Huskies were unable to tie it up and lost 2-1. The team lost both games at this weekend's Harvard Invitational, including a 3-0 loss to Miami-Ohio in its first game.

Wilner made one save on just three shots. She was named to the All-Tournament team following the day's last game. OSU goalie Courtney Cripps stopped seven of Northeastern's eight shots in her first start of the season.

Harvard was the tournament champion at its own invitational, winning both its games. OSU and Miami-Ohio each went 1-1 respectively.

Northeastern will be put to the test this Wednesday when no.11 Boston College comes to Parsons Field. BC will be the highest ranked opponent NU has ever faced.
