Whitney Shean scored a hat trick as the Northeastern field hockey team exploded for six second-half goals on the way to a 7-1 win over New Hampshire on Friday.
The game did not look promising early on for the Huskies. Shauna Sellinger deflected a shot from MacKenzie Stuart into the goal for the Wildcats at 7:01 to give New Hampshire the early lead. The score remained at 1-0 for most of the first half as the Huskies peppered the Wildcat goal with 12 shots in the first half, but were held scoreless by goalkeeper Margaux Shute until the final minute of the half. Shean scored her first goal off a penalty corner, assisted by Jay Quinn at 34:25 to tie the score for halftime.
The Red and Black offense that struggled to score in the first, though, sprang to life in the second half as Shean quickly turned a tie game into a two-goal lead by scoring twice in the 38th minute. Both shots were tipped in, one assisted by Natalie Singelais and the other assisted by Stephanie Casper. Shean's first hat trick of the season brings her to seven goals for the year.
NU claimed more insurance at 51:02 when Michaela O'Malley tipped in a crossing pass from Webber. The Huskies completed their scoring at 56:02 when Quinn shot home a give and go from Sarah Eckhoff to put the Huskies on top 7-1.
The Huskies have displayed the most prolific offense in the CAA this year and tonight was no exception as the Huskies earned their seven goals despite 14 saves from Shute by outshooting the Wildcats 31-9.
Husky goalkeeper Colleen Duffy made two saves while allowing one goal in just under 62 minutes.
The Huskies got another pair of goals less than ten minutes later when Ashley Webber took a drive up the field and deposited the ball in the net at 44:15. She repeated the feat on a similar goal a minute later to give the Huskies a comfortable 5-1 lead.
The win gives the Huskies a 7-1 record and places them atop the overall standings in the CAA with conference play set to begin this weekend. The Wildcats fall to 3-7.
Next up for NU is a slate of games against lions and tigers and bears. The Huskies meet Towson in their first ever CAA game on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Sweeney Field. NU visits Brown on Wednesday and plays host to Hofstra on Fri., Sept. 30 at Sweeney Field.
