Northeastern 3,Towson 1

Ashley Webber scored a goal and an assist as the Northeastern field hockey team won its first-ever conference game in the Colonial Athletic Association, beating Towson 3-1 on Sunday at Sweeney Field.

"It's a good win, no doubt," Northeastern head coach Cheryl Murtagh said. "Towson's a good team."

The Huskies got on the scoreboard first on a spectacular play in the 26th minute when Ashley Webber sent a backhand pass to Whitney Shean, who shot it past the diving Christina Armer in goal.

NU maintained the slim 1-0 lead until early in the second half, when Webber converted on one of her signature drives to the goal for the eventual game-winner and her team-leading tenth goal of the year to give the Huskies the 2-0 lead in the 40th minute.

The Huskies grabbed some insurance in the 46th minute when Michaela O'Malley found the back of the net through traffic, scoring for the third consecutive game.

The Tigers prevented NU keeper Colleen Duffy's bid for her first career shutout in the 55th minute, when Kim McEwen deflected a pass from Jessica Auge to the goal to cut the lead to 3-1.

Duffy made six saves while allowing only one goal for her fourth win of the season. "Colleen made some great saves out there, she's really stepped it up," Murtagh said.

The win was the seventh in a row for the Huskies, matching their longest winning streak of last season. NU outshot the Tigers, 26-8.

The Huskies take the field again for a non-conference tilt at Brown on Wednesday. NU returns to CAA play on Friday when the Huskies will host Hofstra at Sweeney Field at 2:30 p.m.

"I'm looking forward to what this team can do in the next couple of weeks," Murtagh said of the Huskies' upcoming schedule as CAA play gets underway.
