Denver shuts out Northeastern

The women's soccer team was shutout by Denver on Sunday, 3-0 in the consolation game of the University of Denver Tournament. Northeastern lost to Wyoming and Denver tied the University of Colorado on Friday, resulting in both teams' appearance in the consolation match.

Junior Northeastern goalie Mariel Wilner stopped 8 shots on goal, but allowed three others to slip in. She is now 1-1-0 on the season. Pioneer goalie Danielle Wiley recorded her first shutout and win of the season after stopping the Huskies' lone shot on goal.

NU was out shot 16-7 while Denver's 13 corner kicks dwarfed Northeastern's single corner. Kristin Kowalik recorded three shots, but none for a score.

Rachel Fry scored Denver's first goal eight minutes into the first half off a pass from Taryn Hemmings. Kyle McFarlane scored the first of two unassisted goals in the second half at the 74 minute mark. Hemmings then sealed the win with a goal in the 82nd minute.

In the tournament's championship game, Colorado overtook Wyoming in overtime to win the Colorado Classic trophy.

Northeastern, now 1-2-0, will host their home opener at Parsons Field on Friday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. against Sacred Heart.
