Northeastern 63, Drexel 60

Aaron Davis scored 21 points and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds as Northeastern edged out Drexel 63-60 to pick up their second consecutive victory in a tightly played CAA contest on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena.

Davis turned in a solid all-around performance as he converted 6-of-8 shots, including a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the arc and 5-of-6 from the stripe. Two of those free throws came with seven seconds on the clock to help ice the victory for the Huskies (9-6, 5-2 CAA).

The Dragons (9-8, 3-3 CAA) trailed 53-47 with 6:13 to play in the second half, before starting a 11-2 run to take a 58-55 lead with just under three minutes remaining. Davis answered for NU with a 3-point field goal 30 seconds later to even the match, but Chaz Crawford grabbed an offensive rebound off a Frank Elegar miss and put Drexel back on top by two with a layup at 0:52.

On the resulting possession, Jose Juan Barea found Shawn James at the top of the key to bury a 3-pointer and take a 61-60 lead. Kennell Sanchez put up a shot for the Dragons with 11 seconds left, but Davis grabbed the rebound, drew the foul, and iced the game with his two free throws.

The game featured eight lead changes and six ties, as the two teams were never separated by more than six points. Northeastern shot just 33.3 percent in the first half, but followed with a 50.0 percent effort in the second on 11-of-22 shooting. Similarly, Drexel shot just 34.6 percent in the first, but converted 16-of-31 (51.6 percent) in the second.

Senior Jose Juan Barea, who needed just 14 points for his 2,000th career point and eight assists for the 600th of his career, finished the day with a season-low 13 points and seven assists. Bennet Davis had 12 points and seven boards for the Huskies and Janon Cole grabbed eight rebounds.

Dominick Mejia scored 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting, while Bashir Mason had eight points and eight assists for the Dragons. Sanchez chipped in with nine points, while Crawford finished with six points and five boards.

The Huskies return to action Thursday night, when they travel to Fairfax, Va. to take on George Mason in a CAA rematch beginning at 7 p.m. The Patriots defeated the Huskies 71-68 on Jan. 2 in Boston.
