Senior Jose Juan Barea recorded his sixth double-double of the season with a 29 point, 10 assist effort as Northeastern defeated Hofstra, 89-73, on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena. The victory is the 1,000th in the 86-year history of Northeastern men's basketball (1,000-921).
Barea's 29 points came on an 11-of-21 shooting effort, including 6-of-8 in the second half to help the Huskies (10-7, 6-3 CAA) overcome an eight point halftime deficit. Collectively, the Huskies converted 19-of-30 shots in the second half (63.3 percent). Also turning in a double-double effort for Northeastern was sophomore Shawn James who scored 12 points and blocked 10 shots, as he fell just a rebound shy of his third career triple-double. Senior Aaron Davis matched his season-high with 21 points, as he drained 5-of-7 from behind the arc and Bobby Kelly scored 12 while Bennet Davis turned in eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the second-straight game.
Loren Stokes scored a career-high 32 points for Hofstra, as he converted 15-of-24 attempts and notched four steals. Aurimas Kieza also had a double-double as he scored 15 points with 13 rebounds and Antoine Agudio scored 13 with three rebounds. Chris Gadley blocked four Husky shots and turned in five points in the effort, while Carlos Rivera scored nine and dished eight assists for the Pride.
Hofstra (12-4, 5-3 CAA) built a seven-point advantage with 7:02 remaining in the first, but the Huskies closed the gap to within two points at 34-32 with 3:19 to play. However, Stokes and Kieza eached turned in four points in an 8-2 run to close the half and take the eight point advantage into the break.
But the Huskies came out from the break on a quick 9-0 run over the first 2:07 to overtake Hofstra and grab the lead for good. They then converted seven of their next eight shots, including four 3-point field goals, to stake a 61-51 lead with 13:08 to play. The Pride cut the lead back to just four points, but Northeastern extended its lead back into double-digits and eventually to 16 points at the final score of 89-73.
The Huskies finished the game shooting 51.6 percent overall on 33-of-64 shooting, while holding Hofstra to 39.5 percent on 18-of-43. They also buried 10-of-20 from 3-point range, while the Pride converted 7-of-22 from deep.
Northeastern hits the road next week, as it stops in Atlanta on Thursday night for a CAA rematch with Georgia State beginning at 7 p.m.
