Sophomore Shawn James scored 12 points to go with 15 rebounds and seven blocks to lead Northeastern to a 68-54 victory over Georgia State on Thursday night at the GSU Sports Arena.
James, who fell just short of a triple double for the second straight game and fourth time this season, nearly put in a double-double effort in the first half alone with 10 points and nine rebounds on 4-of-5 shooting.
The Huskies (11-7, 7-3 CAA) used a 13-0 run beginning at 15:53 to turn a one point deficit into a 22-10 lead at 8:47 to go in the period after a three by junior Adrian Martinez. James' first half effort was nearly matched by the Panthers' Deven Dickerson, who scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds, while each had three first half blocks. However, the Huskies turned the ball over just three times in the half, while eight GSU turnovers led to nine points for NU.
In the second half, Northeastern missed its first four shots, while the Panthers rattled off an 8-0 run to draw within three at 17:06. Jose Juan Barea, who shot just 1-for-9 in the first half, answered with a pair of threes to push Northeastern's advantage back to nine. The Huskies would push their lead to as many as 21 before GSU closed the game on a 7-0 run.
Barea finished the night with 15 points and eight points, while Janon Cole hit 4-of-6 and all five free throw attempts for 13 points and a career-high three steals. Aaron Davis scored seven for the Huskies while Bobby Kelly chipped in with six.
Dickerson finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Panthers. Justin Billingslea added nine points, while Lance Perique scored eight with four boards.
Northeastern returns to action on Saturday night, as it travels to UNC Wilmington for a CAA contest beginning at 7 p.m.
