Northeastern 89, Georgia State 63

Senior Jose Juan Barea recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 26 points and 10 assists to lead Northeastern to an 89-63 CAA victory over Georgia State and snap a four-game losing streak on Thursday night at Matthews Arena.

The Huskies (7-5, 3-1 CAA) fell behind 12 minutes into the half as the Panthers (3-8, 1-3 CAA) opened the game by converting 11 of their first 19 field goals to take a 27-21 lead after a Boyd Copeland layup. But Northeastern regrouped by making six of its next eight field goals to take a 39-30 advantage with just under four minutes to play. Barea had a solid first half of play, sinking his first five shots and finishing with 18 points.

In the second half, the Huskies started with an 18-3 run to build their lead to 20 points. They increased their advantage to as many as 26 late in the game by holding Georgia State to just 35.4 percent shooting overall, while blistering the nets at a 55.2 percent clip on the night. Northeastern came into the contest shooting just 36.5 percent during its losing streak. Barea grabbed five rebounds to go with his 10-of-19 shooting performace. Bennet Davis finished with 16 points and six boards while Adrian Martinez scored 10, on 3-of-5 from long range. Both Janon Cole and Aaron Davis each turned in nine-point performances, as they combined to grab 13 rebounds, while Shawn James notched eight boards with seven points and four blocks.

Copeland was the Panthers' leading scorer, turning in 16 points, while Justin Billingslea scored 14 and Malcolm Manier notched 13.

Northeastern controlled the boards, staking a 43-29 advantage over Georgia State for the game. The Huskies also outscored GSU in the paint by a 42-26 margin and scored 16 points on the fast break.

Northeastern returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it heads to Norfolk, Va. to take on reigning CAA Champion Old Dominion for a conference clash beginning at Noon. The game will be broadcast live in the Boston area on the CN8 network.
