Isiah Hunter and Valdas Vasylius combined for 33 points in the second half as Old Dominion overcame a 13-point halftime deficit to defeat Northeastern, 85-79, in a CAA matchup on Saturday afternoon at the Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va.
After scoring two points a piece in the first half and shooting a combined 1-for-14, the two erupted to shoot 10-for-15 from the floor and 11-for-14 from the stripe in the second half. The Huskies (7-6, 3-2 CAA) fell on foul trouble in the second half as both Shawn James and Bennet Davis picked up their fourth fouls with over 12 minutes remaining in the game. The Monarchs (11-4, 4-1 CAA) rallied behind a 54.8 percent shooting effort in the second half (17-for-31) after shooting just 31.4 percent in the first half.
The Huskies shot 55.2 percent from the floor in the first half, but came out in the second converting just 12-of-34 for a 35.3 percent effort. Northeastern built a 20-6 lead early in the first after hitting eight of their first 12 while holding ODU to just 17.6 percent in the opening 12 minutes, thanks in part to six of Shawn James' seven first half blocks.
The Monarchs closed the Northeastern lead to 31-26 with 3:27 to play in the first half, but a 9-0 run built NU's lead back to 16. Brian Henderson drained a three just before the half to close the Husky lead to 13 points at the break. Henderson finished with 16 points on 4-of-5 from three-point range.
Hunter led the Monarchs with 21 points, while Vasylius, Henderson and Arnaud Dahi each drained 16 in the win. Drew Williamson finished the day with nine assists and just three turnovers.
Jose Juan Barea set a Constant Center visitors record with 32 points as he picked up his second-straight double-double with 10 assists. James finished the night with nine blocks, nine boards and 12 points. Bobby Kelly also notched 12 points while Bennet Davis scored 13 and grabbed seven rebounds.
The Huskies return to action Thursday night when they host Delaware in a CAA matchuup beginning at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena.
