No. 18 Syracuse 81, Northeastern 58

Eric Devendorf scored 19 points to lead four members of the Orange in double-digits, as No. 18 Syracuse defeated Northeastern, 81-58, in a non-conference basketball game played Wednesday night before 19,007 fans at the Carrier Dome.

The sophomore guard netted 13 of his game-high 19 in the first half, as he helped lead the Orange (4-0) back from a 15-point deficit with 13:25 remaining in the first half, to take an eight-point lead heading into the break.

The Huskies (0-1) raced out of the gates, sinking five of their first six field goal attempts and posting a 22-7 lead, thanks to a 15-0 run midway through the first. The Husky-run included a four-point play from senior Adrian Martinez at 15:48.

However, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim called a timeout at 13:25 to regroup his squad.

Following the 30-second break, 'Cuse rattled off a 9-0 run of its own over the next 1:51 and the Orange took the lead permanently after a fast-break dunk from freshman Paul Harris gave the hosts a 34-33 lead with 2:38 remaining in the half. Harris' dunk was part of an 11-0 run to end the half.

Northeastern shot 43.8 percent from the floor in the first half (14-of-32), but was held to just 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) in the second half. The Orange also controlled the boards for the night, posting a 45-26 rebounding margin, led by 13 caroms from senior Terrence Roberts and 12 (to go with 16 points) from Harris.

Freshman Matt Janning led the Huskies in scoring; connecting on 6-of-14 for 16 points in his collegiate debut, while Martinez scored 13 with six assists and senior Bennet Davis scored 12, also grabbing a team-high five rebounds. Freshman Manny Adako scored six points, all in the first half, while sophomore Eugene Spates scored five for head coach Bill Coen, who made his head coaching debut with the Huskies.

Devendorf added eight assists for Syracuse, while senior Demetrius Nichols scored 15 and sophomore Andy Rautins chipped in with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting. The Orange helped build their lead by getting the ball in transition, putting up 18 points on the fast break, to Northeastern's four.

The Huskies continue their non-conference play against Big East schools, as they visit No. 5 Pittsburgh on Friday to kick off three games in three days for the Commonwealth Colonial Athletic Association Classic. The game tips off at 5 p.m.
