Shawn Hopes scored 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while Johnathon Jones added 15 points to lead Oakland to a 67-52 victory over Northeastern on the second day of the Colonial Classic Tournament played Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center.
The Grizzlies shot 23-of-52 overall from the floor (44.2 percent), while holding the Huskies to a 19-of-51 (37.3 percent) effort on the day. Oakland also posted a 41-25 rebounding advantage in the victory, led by an 11-rebound afternoon from Patrick McCloskey.
The game was played tight over the first 12 minutes, with the Grizzlies leading the entire time, but not by more than five points. A jumper from NU senior Bennet Davis brought the Huskies (0-3) within one at 17-16, but Oakland responded with a 7-0 run over a span of 1:39 to extend its lead to eight points. That lead would push to as many as 11 in the half before an 8-2 Husky run closed the half. Senior Bobby Kelly drained a pull-up 3-pointer from just over half court as time expired to end the run and bring Northeastern within five at 30-25 at the break.
Oakland came out strong in the second, building the lead to as many as 14 points in the half. The Huskies mounted one final run, a 10-0 streak behind three triples, one from freshman Matt Janning and a pair from Kelly to cut the lead again to just four points at 51-47 with 5:47 remaining. However, Jones took over for the Grizzlies, scoring 11 of the team's final 14 points to give Oakland its largest and final lead of 15 points to end the game.
Davis finished the day with 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting, while Kelly connected on six of his nine shots for 18 points. Janning finished with seven points and six assists for Northeastern.
The Huskies complete the three-game Colonial Classic Tournament on Sunday afternoon by taking on in-state rival Massachusetts beginning at 2 p.m.
