PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Rashaun Freeman scored 24 points and James Life added 19 as Massachusetts pulled away early in the second half after trailing by as many as eight points and defeated in-state opponent Northeastern 79-56 on Sunday.
Massachusetts (3-1) won twice while playing three games in three days in the Colonial Athletic Association Classic, beating the Huskies and Oakland, Mich., and losing to No. 4 Pittsburgh. Northeastern dropped all three games and is 0-4 under first-year coach
Bill Coen.
Freeman also had 10 rebounds, and Stephane Lasme added seven points and 11 rebounds. Gary Forbes scored 13 points.
Northeastern led 27-19 with 6½ minutes remaining in the first half, but the Minutemen outscored the Huskies 17-5 the rest of the half. UMass opened a 13-point lead less than three minutes in the second half, going on a 10-1 run to start the half as Life converted a three-point play and hit a 3-pointer on a jumper and Freeman scored twice inside.
The Minutemen had too much size and depth for the Huskies, who were outscored 42-10 on points scored from inside the foul lanes.
Matt Janning scored 19 points and Bennet Davis had 18 for the Huskies.
