The Northeastern men's basketball team presented head coach
Bill Coen with his first career victory with a 73-54 win over cross-town rival Boston University in a non-conference showdown on Tuesday night at Matthews Arena. Leading the way for the Huskies were seniors Adrian Martinez and Bennet Davis.
Martinez racked up a career-high 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting and a stellar 5-of-6 shooting behind the line, while Davis posted a double-double effort with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting to go with 10 rebounds in the victory for Northeastern (1-4).
The Huskies shot 17-of-28 (51 percent) from the floor that included a blistering first half, which saw Northeastern connect on 17-of-28 (60.7 percent) of its shots with eight 3-point field goals (three from Martinez). The game opened with the Huskies racing to a 17-3 advantage just 4:22 into the game.
However, in the second half, the Terriers chipped away at the lead, cutting it to six at 13:05 in the period at 49-44 after a lay up from Omari Peterkin. But Northeastern responded by rattling off a pair of threes from Martinez and senior Bobby Kelly to push the lead back to double digits. Boston University drew no closer than nine points the remainder of the game.
Freshman Matt Janning also had a fine outing, posting 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting with three triples and three assists while Kelly chipped in with 11 points in 39 minutes of play. Freshman Manny Adako scored four points and grabbed six rebounds as well for Northeastern.
Peterkin led the Terriers in scoring with 15 points to go with 14 rebounds, while Tyler Morris scored 14 and Corey Lowe added 10 points. The Terriers shot 18-of-50 (36 percent) overall, but outrebounded the Huskies by a 36-23 margin.
Northeastern takes the floor again on Saturday afternoon with a non-conference visit to Rider beginning at 3 p.m.
