Rider 70, Northeastern 69

Senior Terrance Mouton took the down low and layed in a basket with just 0:05 remaining in the game to take back the lead and hold off a 10-point Husky comeback over the final five minutes as the Rider Broncs edged Northeastern in a 70-69 thriller at Alumni Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Mouton, who finished with nine points on the game, connected on 4-of-8 shots and helped the Broncs hold on to a double-digit lead for most of the second half by taking high percentage shots, as the team forced the ball into the post and connected on 16-of-28 (57.1 percent) for the period. However, the Huskies remained in the game down the stretch thanks to some clutch 3-point shooting from senior Adrian Martinez and resurgence on offense from the Husky frontcourt. The lead was whittled to just one point with 1:03 in the game after Martinez curled into the lane and layed the ball in. The Broncs turned the ball over and the Huskies took their first lead since early in the first when freshman Manny Adako pounded the ball down low and put in a short-range hook shot, capping off a 15-4 run to take a 69-68 advantage with just 0:17 on the clock before Mouton's heroics.

The Broncs opened up a tight game in the first half with a 16-1 run, holding Northeastern without a bucket for a stretch of 6:36. Leading the way for Rider, sophomore Lamar Johnson scored eight of his 10 first half points during the run, while junior Joel Green scored 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting. The Broncs' lead increased to as many as 10 in the half and stood that way with 2:07 to play in the first before senior Adrian Martinez rattled off five straight to close the gap to 36-31 at the break. Overall, the Broncs shot an even 50 percent from the floor in the first (13-for-26), while the Huskies connected on just 30.3 percent in the first 20 (10-of-33).

Five Broncs finished in double-figures in the scoring column, as brothers Jason Thompson and Ryan Thompson each scored 12 points along with sophomores Harris Mansell and Lamar Johnson, while Green finished the day with 11 points. The Broncs picked up 40 points in the paint on the day, while Jason Thompson led Rider in rebounding with nine and dished a game-high seven assists.

Martinez set a career-high in scoring for the second consecutive game, putting in 22 points on 7-of-16 shooting, as he played all 40 minutes of the game. Adako, who played just three minutes in the first half with foul trouble, finished with 12 points, all in the second, while freshman Matt Janning added 13 for the Huskies. Senior Bobby Kelly played 39 minutes and logged nine points, while senior Bennet Davis added nine with 11 rebounds in 36 minutes of action.

The Huskies return home next Saturday to host UNC Wilmington in CAA league action on Sat., Dec. 2 at Matthews Arena, beginning at 1 p.m.
