Senior Bennet Davis secured a career-high 19 rebounds, while posting eight points and six blocked shots to lead Northeastern University to a 51-41 victory over New Hampshire on Monday evening at Solomon Court.
The victory improves the Huskies (3-6) to a perfect 3-0 at home this season and gives NU its seventh-straight victory dating back to Jan. 18, 2003 in the series with the Wildcats (1-8). Overall, Northeastern leads the all-time matchup, 85-35, while Monday's game was the lowest scoring game between Northeastern and New Hampshire since the 1945-46 season when NU took home a 46-44 win.
Davis controlled the inside game for Northeastern and had help on the offensive end from fellow captains, seniors Adrian Martinez and Bobby Kelly. Martinez finished the night 5-of-10 from the floor for 15 points, while Kelly turned in 14 points on a 6-of-9 effort.
Both teams struggled on the offense, as Northeastern shot just 35.3 percent overall, while UNH posted just a 26.3 percent shooting effort, including a mere 6-of-29 (20.7 percent) performance in the first half.
The Huskies used a 6-0 run behind back-to-back 3-point buckets from Martinez to take a 35-24 lead with 13:50 remaining in the second half, but UNH cut the lead back to just four with a quick 7-0 run. NU held a 41-38 lead with 6:49 left and rattled off a 10-0 run to seal the victory. The run was highlighted by the Huskies' final bucket when Martinez forced a steal and hit Kelly with a behind-the-back pass under pressure for the team's final bucket.
Leading the way for New Hampshire, senior Blagoj Janev scored a game-high 16 with eight rebounds while Dan McGeary added nine for the Wildcats.
Kelly also matched his career-high as he grabbed seven rebounds for NU and Eugene Spates scored four and grabbed five boards.
The Huskies return to action on Friday night, as they visit Detroit beginning at 7 p.m.
