Detroit 60, Northeastern 51

Senior Ryvon Coville, the Horizon League's leading rebounder, and junior Brandon Cotton each scored 16 points and to help lead Detroit to a 60-51 victory over Northeastern in a non-conference men's basketball match up on Friday night at Calihan Hall.

Coville used a strong effort in the second half by scoring the team's first eight points of the period and grabbing five of his game-high 16 boards in that span to extend a four-point lead at the break into double-digits and as many as 20. Cotton paced the Titans (3-8) in the first half with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

Northeastern (3-7) opened the game on a cold streak from the floor, converting just four of its first 16 from the floor, but the Huskies kept the game tight with a strong rebounding effort and by converting 8-of-9 at the free throw line in the half. The Huskies took their first lead of the game at 20-19 with 5:20 to play on a three by senior Bobby Kelly, which was part of a 9-2 NU run. Northeastern's lead extended to as many as four in the half after sophomore Eugene Spates converted his second three to take a 25-21 lead with 3:02 in the period. From there, the Titans rattled off seven straight before a pair of Mark Washington free throws made it 28-27 in favor of UDM with 0:23 on the clock. With 2.9 seconds on the clock, the Titans had one last chance and found Cotton who buried a three from the baseline as time expired to give UDM its 31-27 advantage at the break.

With a 39-34 lead in the second half, the Titans went off on a 16-2 run over a span of 7:18 to take a 55-36 lead with 7:21 to play. Northeastern. After being down by 19 at 60-41 with 5:15 left in the game, the Huskies scored the game's final 10 points, but the clock expired with the Titans holding the 60-51 final margin. The Huskies committed 11 turnovers in the second half.

Also scoring in double-digits for Detroit, junior Jon Goode scored 10, while sophomore Chris Hayes added six in the effort.

Martinez led the way offensively for NU with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while senior Bennet Davis scored 10 and Kelly scored seven and matched his career-high with seven boards for the second consecutive game. Spates also added 11 for Northeastern to go with five rebounds, as the Huskies remain winless on the road this season.

Northeastern returns to action after Christmas as it visits Louisville on Dec. 27 for the team's fourth match up of the season with a Big East opponent. The game tips off at 7 p.m.
