Freshman guard Jerry Smith led all scorers with 16 points and eight rebounds, to help Louisville to a 61-41 victory over Northeastern in non-conference men's basketball action at Freedom Hall on Wednesday night.
The Cardinals (8-4) used a 10-0 run midway through the second half to break the game open after a tightly contested first half. Louisville shot just 8-for-28 in the first half, but rebounded with an 11-for-25 second half, while the Huskies (3-8) did the opposite; shooting a strong 10-for-22 in the first and just 5-for-18 in the second. Junior David Padgett helped in the cause for the Cardinals, with 10 of his 12 points in the second half. Louisville also outrebounded Northeastern 44-27 in the game and 24-11 in the second half. The Huskies managed just three rebounds on the offensive glass.
Northeastern held a 27-25 advantage heading into the break thanks largely to a solid offensive effort from sophomore Eugene Spates, who connected on 5-of-7 shots in the period, including three 3-point buckets for 13 points. The Huskies took their largest lead of the half with 13:11 to play in the period at 15-7 after a 13-2 run that included three consecutive 3-point field goals; two by Spates and one by senior Bobby Kelly. NU secured just two offensive boards in the period, but the second gave the Huskies the lead heading into the half after junior Mark Washington grabbed a Kelly miss and layed it back in with just 11 seconds on the clock.
Junior Juan Palacios added eight points and 10 rebounds in the victory for the Cardinals, while sophomore Terrence Williams scored nine to go with eight rebounds. Davis finished with 10 points ad eight rebounds for Northeastern and Kelly, who played just under 40 minutes in the game, scored nine points to go with four rebounds. Neither team shot well from the free throw line, with Louisville converting 16-of-29 at the stripe and NU just 7-of-15.
The Huskies complete their three game road trip on Sunday with a visit to Boston College, the school where Husky head coach
Bill Coen served as an assistant and the associate head coach for the past nine seasons. The game tips off at 4 p.m. and will be televised in the Northeast on NESN.
