Carlos Rivera scored 22 points to lead Hofstra to an 89-78 victory over Northeastern in CAA action on Saturday afternoon at the Hofstra Arena.
Hofstra built a 62-52 advantage at 11:10 in the second half, before the Huskies cut the deficit to just four after a 6-0 run led by junior Adrian Martinez. However, a five-minute scoreless drought by Northeastern allowed the Pride lead back its lead back into double digits and up to as many as 19 points at 77-58 with 5:40 remaining. The Huskies (13-10, 9-6 CAA) would not be able to recover, as the Pride held the Huskies to 40.5 percent shooting in the second half, while turning in a solid 18-of-35 effort (51.4 percent) to put the game away.
The Pride took a three-point advantage into the second half, after Carlos Rivera's 3-pointer broke a 36-36 tie with five seconds remaining on the clock. Rivera converted 4-of-7 field goals, including a pair of three-pointers to lead all scorers in the half with 12 points. For the Huskies, Jose Juan Barea was a perfect 6-of-6 from the stripe as he hit for 11 points, while Aaron Davis tallied nine and Shawn James had six points with three blocked shots in the first.
Adrian Uter finished the day with 15 points and 11 rebounds, including 13 in the second half to lead the Pride's rally. Aurimas Kieza also recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Carlos Rivera also had six rebounds and four assists.
Jose Juan Barea led the Huskies with 23 points and six assists, while Adrian Martinez had 17 and Shawn James scored 10 with six blocks. Aaron Davis scored 13 for the Huskies, while Janon Cole had nine points and eight boards.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday night as they welcome James Madison to Matthews Arena for a CAA matchup beginning at 7 p.m.
