Sophomore Shawn James matched a career-high with 11 blocks to go with 17 points and 14 rebounds for his fourth career triple-double to lead Northeastern to a 77-55 CAA victory over James Madison on Wednesday night at Matthews Arena.
James nearly recorded the feat in the first half as he posted 11 rebounds, seven points and eight blocks in the first 20 minutes of play as Northeastern (14-10, 10-6 CAA) jumped to a 29-22 lead at the break. James, who leads the nation in blocks with 154, now holds second on the CAA single-season blocks chart behind David Robinson's 207 rejections in 1985-86. His performance marks the second time in two weeks that James has recorded a triple-double.
The Huskies blocked 14 shots overall, and forced the Dukes (5-19, 2-14 CAA) into 20 turnovers, as James Madison shot just 22-for-70 (31.4 percent) on the evening. Northeastern, who shot a mere 31.4 percent in the first (11-for-35), blistered the nets in the second, connecting on 16-of-31 (51.6 percent), to finish the night shooting 40.9 percent from the floor as it steadily extended its advantage throughout the second half.
Senior Jose Juan Barea finished the night with 23 points and six assists, as he now needs just four points to match Husky great Pete Harris (Class of '81) for second on the NU all-time scoring list at 2,167. Barea had a solid second half effort, as he connected on 6-of-7 with three free throws for 15 points. Senior Janon Cole also turned in a solid performance, scoring seven with 11 rebounds and a career-best four steals in 20 minutes of play. Junior Bennet Davis scored 10 with seven boards and freshman Chris Cyprian scored six points for the Huskies. Also getting in on the action, junior Dipo Popoola recorded his first collegiate points with a pair of free throws with 0:31 left in the contest.
The Huskies held the Dukes' leading scorer and four-time CAA Rookie of the Week Juwann James to just two points on 1-of-8 shooting, as James managed just 19 minutes with foul trouble. Senior David Cooper led the way with 20 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double night, while junior Ray Barbosa scored 14 for James Madison.
The Huskies conclude their 2005-06 home schedule on Saturday when they host Rider at Matthews Arena beginning at 1 p.m.
