Men's Basketball

Northeastern 84, Hofstra 74

A double-double effort of 27 points and 11 rebounds from senior Bennet Davis helped Northeastern snap a six-game winning streak by Hofstra, as the Huskies topped the Pride, 84-74, on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena.

Davis matched his career-high in scoring as he posted the fifth double-double of his career, while connecting on 11-of-12 free throws on the afternoon. The Huskies played well in the paint all afternoon and got themselves to the free throw line 30 times, while converting 25.

Northeastern (5-12, 3-3 CAA) ran up a 37-27 lead at halftime thanks to a 13-0 run which included three three-point buckets off the hands of seniors Adrian Martinez, Bobby Kelly and sophomore Eugene Spates. The Huskies also played turnover-free basketball in the first half, while forcing Hofstra (12-5, 5-1 CAA) into five miscues. Neither team shot the ball particularly well in the opening half, with NU shooting 39.3 percent and Hofstra just 37.5.

The second half was a different story however, as Northeastern and Hofstra traded buckets throughout the half with both teams putting on outstanding shooting performances. The Pride shot 18-of-30 (60 percent) in the second half, but were not to be outdone by the Huskies, who hit 15-of-23 (65.2 percent). During the final 20 minutes, Hofstra came as close as seven at 41-34 when junior Antoine Agudio layed in for two of his 25 points at 16:36 and the Huskies could pull away no further than 14 points on two occasions in the half.

Four Huskies finished in double digits, as Martinez hit 6-of-9 for 19 points and Kelly was 6-of-10 for 15 and freshman Matt Janning scored 10 with a career-high seven boards. Junior Mark Washington also played his best game of the season, scoring four, but matching his career high with seven rebounds and blocking a personal-best four shots in 20 minutes of action. Northeastern also won the rebounding battle by a 32-29 margin.

The Pride were paced by senior Loren Stokes and Agudio, as Stokes scored a game-high 30 points on 13-of-19 shooting, as the two guards combined for 10 rebounds, as well.

Northeastern hits the road next week, beginning with a stop at Drexel on Wednesday night. The game tips off at 7:30 p.m.
