Senior Will Thomas hit 10-of-11 field goal attempts for 20 points to help George Mason roll to a 78-53 victory over Northeastern in CAA men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Patriot Center.
Thomas helped George Mason (11-7, 5-3 CAA) establish a strong interior game as the Patriots outscored the Huskies 48-16 in the paint on the day.
The Huskies (5-14, 3-5 CAA) fell behind early by as many as eight, but rallied behind senior Adrian Martinez who hit five three-point buckets during the half. After Martinez's fourth triple, Northeastern rallied with a 9-0 run to take a 25-24 lead. However, Mason rallied with a 12-0 run of its own, including the first six by Thomas to head into the locker room with a 36-30 advantage.
The Patriots opened the game up in the second half with a quick 12-3 run to take a 15-point advantage at 48-33. Mason outscored NU, 42-23 in the final 20 minutes, as the Patriots held the Huskies to just 28 percent shooting in the last half and to 39.6 percent overall, while blistering the nets at a 54.8 percent mark for the game. GMU also capitalized on Northeastern's 15 turnovers, scoring 17 points off the Husky miscues.
Thomas was joined in double-digit scoring by sophomore John Vaughn, who scored 16 on 6-of-11 shooting. Darryl Monroe, Dre Smith and Folarin Campbell each scored eight points in the win as 10 Patriot players factored in the scoring column. Gabe Norwood and Jordan Carter each tallied five assists and the Patriots turned the ball over just six times.
The Huskies, who connected on 6-of-9 threes in the first half, hit just 2-of-11 in the second. Martinez led NU with 15 first-half points while freshman Matt Janning scored 12 and senior Bennet Davis and freshman Manny Adako each scored 10.
Northeastern returns home on Wednesday night to host James Madison beginning at 7 p.m.
