Men's Basketball

Drexel 68, Northeastern 59

Matt Janning led three Huskies in double figures with 18 points but the Northeastern University men's basketball team lost, 68-59, to Drexel at Matthews Arena Monday night. Janning was 7-of-10 from the field and 2-for-3 from behind the arc. In a grinding half-court game of defensive intensity, Drexel's shot blocking and pressure perimeter defense was enough to edge the Huskies. NU lost at home for only the second time in its last 17 home games. Bennet Davis put up 14 points and seven rebounds while Adrian Martinez added 11 points. NU jumped out to 25-8 lead and led, 33-26, at halftime but couldn't hold on for the win.

The Huskies came out on fire to start the game as NU took a 17-point lead at the 9:03 mark, with the score 25-8. Drexel opened the game with a 3-pointer from Scott Rodgers but Huskies allowed the Dragons only five more points in the next 11 minutes. NU did not commit a turnover in the first 19 minutes of the game and turned the ball over only twice in the first half while forcing nine first-half Drexel turnovers. Drexel closed the first half on an 18-8 run as the Huskies got only three field goals in the last eight minutes of the period. Janning scored 14 of his 18 points in the first half as the Huskies took a 33-26 lead into the break.

Drexel put its defensive talents to use in the second half, limiting the Huskies to 26 points on 42.3 percent shooting from the field with a 1-of-5 showing from 3-point range. The Dragons forced NU into nine second-half turnovers and outscored the Huskies 42-26 in the second half to get the win. Drexel averages 5.9 blocks per game, the most in the CAA, and ranks 22nd in the nation, holding opponents to 59.7 points per game. The Dragons also lead the CAA, limiting teams to 39.0 percent shooting.

Four Dragons scored in double figures led by Frank Elegar who registered 16 points and eight rebounds. Chaz Crawford and Elegar each blocked three shots and Randy Tribbet added one as the Dragons blocked seven shots in the game. Only Connecticut blocked more shots against the Huskies this season with eight.

The Huskies are back in action at Towson on Wed., Jan. 31.
