Senior Adam Payton scored 15 points and hit all four of his free throw attempts in the final 22 seconds of the game to lift William & Mary to a 60-57 victory over Northeastern in CAA action on Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Arena.
Payton converted just 3-of-9 shots from the floor on the day, but was stellar at the line, hitting 8-of-9 including his final four, which ended a 9-0 run for Tribe (9-4, 2-1 CAA), who overcame a 57-51 deficit in the final 2:41 of the game.
The Huskies (3-11, 1-2 CAA) and Tribe went back and forth all afternoon in a game that featured eight ties and 11 lead changes. Northeastern built its led to six after a three from senior Adrian Martinez with 2:42 to play. However, W&M sophomore David Stein answered quickly with a three for the Tribe. The Huskies missed on their next trip down the floor and William & Mary grabbed the rebound. Junior Laimis Kisielius was fouled as he went to the hole and connected on the second of two free throws. Each team missed on its next trip, and NU held the ball and a 57-55 lead with just under a minute to play.
As the Huskies ran their offense, the ball came loose under pressure and the two teams tied it up for a jump ball, with the possession arrow in favor of W&M. This led to another Tribe point, as freshman David Schneider hit 1-of-2 after a foul by freshman Manny Adako to make it a 57-56 game in favor of NU.
Under pressure again from the William & Mary defense, the Huskies turned it over on the inbound and Payton drew a foul, nailing both free throws.
Down the floor and now trailing by one at 58-57, a miss from senior Adrian Martinez from three-point range led to a Tribe rebound and Payton sealed the game with his final two points at the line. Martinez's three-point attempt from half court at the buzzer caromed off the backboard.
Schneider finished with 13 points, including three 3-point buckets and a game-high eight rebounds, while Stein and Kisielius each scored nine for William & Mary.
Senior Bobby Kelly led NU with 17 points, while senior Bennet Davis added 10 points and five boards. The Huskies put forth their best effort of the season at the free throw line, hitting 11-of-12 on the game.
Northeastern continues its Virginia road trip on Monday night, as the Huskies visit Virginia Commonwealth at 7 p.m.
