The women's soccer team upset No. 28 James Madison 1-0 today at Parsons Field with a goal from sophomore forward Liza Rebello in the second half to give the Huskies their first conference win of the season.
The Dukes came into the game in first place in the CAA. The Huskies are now 3-9-3 (1-5-2 CAA) and JMU is 13-2-1 (6-1-1 CAA).
Rebello scored in the 47th minute on a pass from senior defender Hannah Schindler. Schindler carried the ball up the right sideline and passed it in to Rebello from 20 yards out. Rebello headed the ball just over the fingertips of JMU goalie Stephanie Poucher.
It is Rebello's second goal of the season, she leads the team with four points.
JMU nearly tied it up in the 61st minute when CAA Player of the Week Cate Tisinger crossed the ball to Annie Lowry who was just one step short of heading the ball past NU goalie Annie Petrofsky.
In the 67th minute sophomore midfielder Sofia Palmquist was fouled and had to be taken out of the game. Junior Brenna Matthews took the free kick and missed her second goal of the season by inches as the ball went just left of the post. Palmquist did not return to the game.
Tisinger, who leads the CAA in assists (9) was guarded by sophomore Kirsten Hjort and limited to just two shots on goal by the speedy defender.
The Dukes out shot Northeastern 13-6 in the second half including a constant offensive attack in the final eight minutes of the game but senior goalie Annie Petrofsky came up with six saves in the half (nine in the game) to get the shutout.
The Huskies are back in action Friday at 6 p.m. when they host Delaware at Parsons Field. The game will be broadcast live on GoNU.TV.
