Northeastern Huskies

Field Hockey

Northeastern 3, Towson 2

On Sunday, the field hockey team held off CAA opponent Towson at Sweeney Field by a score of 3-2. Senior Stephanie Casper recorded her first two goals of the season, while the Husky defense stepped up again. The Huskies have gone 3-1 on their current home stand and have won two in a row for the first time this season.

All the scoring in the first half came off of penalty corners. The Tigers got on the board first when Christina Boarman launched a hard shot from Laura Schnell, who took the corner, and posted her 11th goal of the season into the lower left corner of the cage.

Northeastern then got on the board five minutes later when Suzanne Hazelzet beat Tigers' goalkeeper Michelle Cheek with a shot to tie the score. Anne-Reike Stuhlmann and Ashley Webber earned assists on the play.

Before the end of the half, the Huskies would score again, getting a goal from senior Stephanie Casper, her first of two on the day. Freshman Pam Aldridge took a penalty corner and sent it right to Casper who shot a one-timer hard into the net to put the Huskies up 2-1 at the end of the half.

The Huskies were out-shot by Towson 5-3 in the first, but the defense held strong, as Hazelzet, Jillian Wilkes, and Montana Hewlett all made stellar defensive plays to keep the Tigers at bay.

The second half was all about the offense as a total of 12 shots was taken. The Huskies kept the momentum from the first half going when they were awarded with a penalty corner within the first minute of the half. This time, the corner was taken by Webber who shot it to Casper once again. Casper took two steps and then fired the ball into the cage for her second goal of the day and eventual game-winner, putting the Huskies up 3-1.

The Tigers wouldn't go quietly and put the surge on late in the half. Finally, as Christina Boarman had possession in the Husky zone, she passed the ball to Kristie Plummer who flicked it to Gabby Mink who put it past NU goalkeeper Liz Centofanti to bring the Tigers within one. But Towson could not erase the defecit and left with its seventh loss of the season.

With the win, Northeastern improves to 6-7 on the season (2-2 CAA) and 9-1 all-time against Towson. The Huskies resume action on Wednesday when they host No. 3 Connecticut at Sweeney Field at 3 p.m.
