Sophomore Manny Adako hit a three-pointer with eight seconds left in regulation to send the Northeastern men's basketball team to overtime against perennial ACC power Maryland, but the Terps took advantage of four Huskies fouling out and squeaked out a victory over the Huskies, 74-72, in front of 17,950 fans Thursday night at the Comcast Center in College Park, Md.
The overtime contest was Northeastern's first since the 2002-03 season when they defeated Albany, 89-80, on Feb. 2, 2003. It was also the first time since a Dec. 12, 1988 contest at Pepperdine that four Huskies fouled out of the game.
The Huskies came back from a six-point halftime deficit to force the extra period as they outscored the Terps 39-33 in the second half and outshot them, 43 percent to 40 percent.
Northeastern took a 40-39 second half lead at 11:31 when sophomore Matt Janning and freshman Chaisson Allen recorded back-to-back steals and fast break layups to take a 41-40 lead.
Eugene Spates then knocked down a three and Adako nailed a jumper giving the Huskies their largest lead of the game, 46-40, with 9:42 remaining.
The two teams traded baskets, but the Huskies held the lead until Bambale Osby tied it, 52-52, with a pair of free throws at 4:47. Maryland (3-0) opened up a five-point lead, 59-54, with two minutes left, but the Huskies clawed back. Adako hit a big jumper to cut it to 59-56. Osby sank a free throw, but missed the second, allowing Janning to get the ball and hit a turn around jumper to cut the deficit to two, 60-58.
The Huskies (0-2) fouled Terps forward Landon Milbourne with 27 seconds left and he hit only one of two free throws. That set up NU's final shot as sophomore Baptiste Bataille took the ball up, drove to the lane and then kicked it out to Adako who quickly shot the ball in for the tying three.
In overtime, the Huskies, with three players having already fouled out, lost sophomore Nkem Ojougboh a minute in when he picked up his fifth foul. The two teams traded baskets until Greivis Vasquez nailed a three at 2:59 to give Maryland a 68-65 lead.
NU once again came back as Janning put in two free throws and Bataille drove in for a layup, giving the Huskies a 69-68 advantage with 1:09 remaining.
However, the Terps answered with more free throws after Husky fouls. James Gist and Eric Hayes each put in two shots and made it a 72-69 score in favor of UM with 23 seconds left.
The Huskies set up for a final shot and Janning got fouled by Vasquez in the act of shooting a three. Janning went to the line, hit the first free throw, but missed the second. He intentionally missed the third, but the rebound was collected by the Terps' Osby.
Osby sank one free throw and the Terps then fouled Bataille, who made both of his free throws to make it 73-72, UM. However, with just one second left, Vasquez made one free throw and missed the second, ending the game.
For Northeastern, Janning had a career-high 26 points on 10-of-21 shooting. He played a career-high 43 minutes.
Adako had a career-high 15 points while Allen had 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and seven steals, which is the most by a Husky since Marcus Blossom had seven for the Huskies against Maine on Feb. 24, 2000. Allen's seven steals represented 30 percent of Maryland's 23 turnovers.
For the Terrapins, Gist led the way with a game-high 27 points. Osby chipped in 16 points and 13 rebounds. 14 of his 16 points came on free throws, which helped the Terps win the game. Maryland went to the line 46 times in the contest, connecting on 31 of them. Northeastern went to the line only 13 times, hitting on nine of them.
Northeastern will play in Boston for the first time this season when they travel to the Case Gymnasium to take on the Boston University Terriers Monday night at 8 p.m.
