Sophomore Manny Adako scored a career-high 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting and Chaisson Allen scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Northeastern men's basketball team to a 65-58 win over Boston University Monday night at Case Gymnasium in Boston.
The win is the Huskies' first of the young season, improving to 1-2 while the Terriers drop to 1-3. The Huskies never trailed in the contest and the score was tied only twice.
Allen, who was named CAA Co-Rookie of the Week today, chipped in five rebounds, three assists and three steals to go with his career-high 20 points. Allen was only 4-for-14 from the field, but was 11-for-12 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Nkem Ojougboh continued to be a force around the basket, scoring 11 points and pulling down 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
The Huskies were in control of the score for the entire game as they jumped out to a quick 4-0 start after an Adako layup and an Allen steal and fast break layup. From there, the Huskies went on to take a nine-point lead, 18-9, when sophomore Matt Janning nailed a three-pointer at 9:10.
The Terriers kept the game close though, going on a 13-6 run to close the first half and cut the deficit to 24-22.
To start the second half, BU tied it on a Matt Wolff three to make it 25-25. After trading points, the Huskies took the lead for good when Adako hit a jumper at 16:08 to take a 29-27 lead. That basket started an 8-0 NU run that culminated with an alley oop dunk and a follow-up jumper from Ojougboh to give the team a 35-27 advantage.
Again, the Terriers remained close, but each time they closed the gap, the Huskies opened it back up again. BU got as close as eight points, 54-46, with 1:50 remaining, but Allen nailed a clutch three on a pass from sophomore Baptiste Bataille to make it 57-46 and all but end the game. Allen would go on to hit six free throws in the final minute to seal the game.
Bataille was an unsung hero for the Huskies, dishing out four assists and pulling down five rebounds in just 15 minutes of action.
Matt Wolff and Corey Lowe each scored 12 points to lead the way for the Terriers.
The Huskies will hit the road once again to take on the Maine Black Bears this Saturday at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine at 12 p.m.
