Men's Basketball

Rhode Island 92, Northeastern 72

Men's basketball team sophomore captain Matt Janning scored a career-high 34 points on 13-of-18 shooting, but the Rhode Island Rams outscored the Huskies 33-13 over the final 12 minutes of the game to earn a 92-72 victory Wednesday night at the Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I.

Janning's 34 points is the most by a Husky since Jose Juan Barea dropped 32 points on Old Dominion on Jan. 17, 2006. Janning also set career highs in field goals and field goal attempts.

Down nine points, 46-35, at halftime, the Huskies roared back as Janning scored nine points in the first 5:34 of the second half and helped NU cut the deficit to 55-54. At 59-56 URI, Janning stole the ball from Marquis Jones and dunked the ball in to make it 59-58. Freshman Chaisson Allen was fouled one possession later and hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 59-59 with 11:57 left in the contest.

That was when Rhode Island took over as the Rams went on a 21-5 run that lasted until Janning nailed another three with 4:23 left in the game. During the run, Keith Cothran and Joe Mbang each scored six points while the Huskies went 2-for-8. URI built up a 20-point advantage with 2:51 left and iced the game.

The Rams had led for most of the first half, building an eight-point lead with 6:05 remaining as URI's Jimmy Baron knocked down a three to make it 32-24. However, Janning kept the Huskies in the game as he popped three-pointers on consecutive trips down the court, including one on a fast break assist from Allen. That cut the Rams' lead to two, 32-30 with 5:28 to go in the first half.

Janning was red hot with his shot, scoring 16 first half points on 6-of-8 shooting for Northeastern. He accounted for 44 percent of the team's first half scoring.

After Janning cut the deficit, the Rams answered with a 9-2 run that included five points by Baron, a three and a layup. Meanwhile the Huskies only shot 3-for-8 and committed four turnovers to close out the half. URI built a 45-36 lead going into the break, aided by its 58 percent three-point shooting.

For the game, URI shot 52 percent (33-for-64), including 50 percent (12-for-24) from three-point land. The Huskies shot 47 percent (28-for-60), 25 percent (4-for-16) from behind the arc.

In addition to Janning's 34, sophomore Manny Adako added 12 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Nkem Ojougboh pulled down 10 boards for his fourth 10-plus rebounding game of the season.

Baron and Parfait Bitee each scored 17 points to lead Rhode Island. Mbang chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Huskies' five-game opening road trip has come to an end and they will play at Matthews Arena for the first time this season this Saturday against CAA rival James Madison at 1 p.m.
