The Huskies put up a valiant effort, but ultimately fell to the top-seeded Old Dominion 3-0 on Saturday in the CAA Semifinals in Virginia Beach, Va. The Lady Monarchs managed a goal in the first half and two in the second from Katie Ueberroth to advance to the CAA Final for the second straight season.
Both team's defenses were strong in the first half, as the game remained scoreless until the final two minutes of the frame. ODU had numerous scoring opportunites but were foiled by the Huskies. In one instance, Kathleen Shea went on a breakaway and was one-on-one with NU goalie Liz Centofanti. Centofanti came out of the cage to challenge Shea and forced a wide shot from the Lady Monarch.
Heading into the final two minutes of the first half, ODU was awarded a penalty corner which they converted for the game-winning goal, scored by Kathleen Shea. Shea received the ball from Katelyn Smither and tipped it up high over the shoulder of NU goalie Liz Centofanti into the upper right corner of the net. It marks Shea's ninth goal of the season. Shea also scored the game-winner in the regular season matchup that saw ODU win 1-0 in overtime.
The Huskies came out strong on the attack in the second, taking two pairs of consecutive penalty corners but were unable to convert any of them to scores. ODU goalie Kelly Driscoll lived up to her reputation and made some great saves off Ashley D'Ambra and Ashley Bascetta, who forced Driscoll to make a diving stop of NU's second penalty corner shot.
Old Dominion got on the board late in the second when Ueberroth tipped the ball into the net on the right side after a scramble in the circle. CAA Rookie of the Year Loran Hatch was credited with the assist on the play.
Ueberroth struck again at 59:56 after Old Dominion's third penalty corner of the half. Again there was a scramble in front of the net, causing Centofanti to dive between the net and the post, but Ueberroth was able to sneak it past her for the Lady Monarchs' third goal. Hatch registered the assist on the goal that clinched the win for Old Dominion.
The score was not indicative of how close the game was, as the Huskies played a competitive game throughout. But for the second straight year, Northeastern was eliminated from the CAA Championships by Old Dominion.
The Lady Monarchs will face James Madison in the conference semifinal on Sunday to decide the CAA Champion, who will automatically be awarded a berth to the NCAA Tournament.
The Huskies finish the season with a record of 9-12, and 5-5 in conference play. The game marks the final appearances for Northeastern's six seniors: Stephanie Casper, Liz Centofanti, Ashley D'Ambra, Meaghan Dorsi, Harriet Hoyer and Ashley Webber.
