CAA Rookie of the Year candidate Matt Janning delivered 18 points to lead the Northeastern University men's basketball team to a CAA road win over Delaware, 70-61, on Wednesday night. The Huskies outrebounded Delaware on the offensive and defensive end and got six more second-chance points. Delaware missed its first eight shots of the game and added a turnover before getting on the board at the 14:52 mark with a Courtney lay in. The Huskies led for the first 15:30 before the Hens tied the game at 18, as Brian Johnson converted on a 3-point play for Delaware. The Huskies answered with a 13-4 run to close the period and take a 31-22 lead into the break. NU limited Delaware to nine first-half field goals on 30 percent shooting with only three Hens putting up points in the period. Delaware was 2-of-11 (18.2 percent) from 3-point range in the half.
Janning opened the second with a jumper to put NU up by 11, its first double-figure lead of the game, before Delaware ran off a 10-2 run to come within three with 15:44 on the clock. With Delaware on the verge of a comeback, Eugene Spates put the Huskies up by six with 3-pointers on consecutive Husky possessions. The Hens continued to stay close and after a pair of free throws from Courtney and Olawoye, Delaware cut the lead to two points with 10:45 remaining. That would be Delaware's last push of the game as Bennet Davis buried a 3-pointer and then converted on two free throws to start an 11-2 run that put NU up by 11 with 7:50 left. The Huskies took their largest lead of the game and put Delaware out of striking distance when Bataille converted on a 3-point play to put NU up 15 with 2:36 remaining.
Up next, NU hosts George Mason on Senior Day at Matthews Arena Saturday. Senior tri-captains Bennet Davis, Adrian Martinez and Bobby Kelly will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
