Northeastern 73, George Mason 50

The Northeastern University men's basketball team rolled past George Mason (15-14, 9-9 CAA) Saturday at Matthews Arena on Senior Day, 73-50. The Huskies have now won three-straight and five of their last six. The Huskies led the entire way as NU hit 11 3-pointers on 44 percent shooting while Mason was only 1-of-10 from long range.

With the win, the Huskies earn the fifth seed in the CAA Championship. NU will face 12th seeded Delaware on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Richmond, Va. Finishing fifth in the standings, the Huskies match their conference finish from a year ago.

All three senior captains scored in double figures led by Bennet Davis who racked up 20 points, five rebounds and four blocks. Bobby Kelly scored 17 points with four assists and Adrian Martinez scored 11 points and hustled for six boards.

CAA Rookie of the Year favorite Matt Janning was the fourth player in double-figures as he tallied 15 points, six rebounds and six assists. No player for the Partiots reached double-digits as Will Thomas and Folarin Campbell each had eight.

The Huskies ran away with the game early, opening up a 9-0 lead and starting the game 11-for-14 from the field to lead 24-6 before the 10-minute mark in the first half. Mason didn't score until the 16:08 mark and missed its first five shots. The Huskies shot 57.1 percent in the first half holding Mason to 33.3 percent shooting and no 3-pointers to lead by 21 at the break. After the first half, the three Husky seniors were the only players in double figures.

In the second half, Mason never trimmed the lead to less than 18 while NU led by as many as 26 points. With 1:30 left in the game, head coach Bill Coen substituted all three Husky seniors to a standing ovation from 2,214 fans at Matthews Arena.

The Huskies outshot Mason from the field, the 3-point line and the free throw line. The Huskies were 11-for-25 (44 percent) from 3-point range while the Patriots were 1-for-10. NU was perfect from the free throw line at 8-of-8 while Mason was 5-of-16 (31.3 percent). Overall from the field, the Huskies shot 48.2 percent and Mason shot 44.9 percent.
