The Northeastern University men's basketball team fell, 80-70, to Hoftsra in Hempstead, N.Y. on Saturday night. Five Huskies scored in double figures led by freshman Matt Janning who scored 16. Bobby Kelly netted 14, Adrian Martinez scored 13, Bennet Davis got 11 and Eugene Spates had 10. The Huskies looked sharp and came as close as six points in the second half but couldn't match Hofstra's starting guards on offense who combined for 61 points.
NU looked to go inside on offense in the first half and started the game with a lob into Manny Adako who converted on a lay in to put the Huskies up, 2-0. Hofstra's offense was clicking in the first, as the Pride got 12 points in the next four minutes to take a 12-5 lead at the 15:43 mark. Both teams got their share of 3-point looks in the period, as NU hit four and Hoftsra hit five. Eugene Spates had two of those 3-pointers for NU, as he came off the bench and turned two offensive rebounds into another four points to score 10-total points in the half. Starting at the 10:44 mark, the teams combined to score on seven straight possessions without a miss, and at one point, alternated consecutive 3-pointers on four straight of those possessions. The offensive outburst ended with 8:48 left in the half with Hofstra leading by seven at 28-21. The Pride then used an 11-3 run to take its largest lead of the half with 3:42 remaining at 39-24. The Huskies closed the half on a 5-1 run to head into the locker room down by 11 at 40-29. Hofstra was 5-of-10 from 3-point range in the half and Carlos Rivera was 5-of-7 from field, scoring 12 points in the period to pick up the Pride on offense.
The Huskies opened the second half on an 8-4 run that closed an 11-point halftime gap to seven. Kelly got seven of NU's first 12 points in the second half to help the Huskies get even closer at 52-46 after Martinez hit his third 3-pointer of the game to get NU within six points with 13:00 minutes left. Hofstra extended its lead back out to double digits thanks to four free throws from Rivera and two Lauren Stokes jumpers. Kelly and Martinez then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to get NU back within six points with 7:50 remianing. That was as close as NU would come as Hoftsra's guard play took over down the stretch. Kelly scored 12 points in the second to keep NU close.
Loren Stokes and Carlos Rivera each scored 21 points for the Pride and Antoine Agudio got 19.
The Huskies play next at Matthews Arena on Wed. Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.
