Northeastern 65, Towson 55

The Northeastern University men's basketball team pulled even with Towson for sixth place in the CAA with a 65-55 win over the Tigers at Matthews Arena Wednesday night. Both teams are now 6-8 in the conference.

Seniors Bennet Davis and Bobby Kelly both had huge nights on offense and defense. Kelly poured in a career-high 25 points to go with six boards, five assists and three blocks. Davis racked up 23 points and 13 rebounds for his third double-double of the year. Manny Adako was the Huskies' third-leading scorer and the game's fifth with eight points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting night. He also had a steal and an assist.

The Huskies outshot Towson 40 to 34.5 percent from the field. Gary Neal scored a game-high 26 points but was 9-of-25 (36 percent) from the floor and 5-of-13 (38.5) from 3-point range. Kelly, who guarded Neal for the majority of the game, got his 25 points on 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) shooting overall and 4-of-8 (50 percent) shooting from behind the arc. All three of Kelly's blocks came on Neal jumpers. NU held the Tigers to 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) shooting from 3-point range on the game. Dennard Abraham was the only other Tiger in double figures with 12 points and eight rebounds.

NU pulled down 41 rebounds and Towson had 34 as the Huskies outrebounded their opponent for the fifth time this season. NU grabbed more than 40 rebounds for the second time this year and got 15 offensive boards, its second most this season. Freshman Matt Janning had an off-night shooting the ball with five points but grabbed eight boards including two on the offensive end that led to two second-chance points. Janning added four assists.

Kelly scored NU's first eight points to help the Huskies go up by two with 11:16 left in the first. NU held its lead for the remainder. The Huskies' largest lead came with 5:15 remaining in the first but Neal hit three 3-pointers in the last five minutes of the period to cut the Tigers' deficit to nine heading into the break. Neal opened the second period with a fourth 3-ball as Towson continued to chip away. Towson cut the lead to one point on three occasions in the second but each time NU hit a jumper on the next possession to increase the margin. NU was 10-for-13 at the free throw line in the second to help ice the win.

Up next, the Huskies travel to Harrisonburg, Va. on Sat., Feb. 10 to face James Madison at 7 p.m.
