The Northeastern University men's basketball team defeated Delaware, 77-67, in the opening round of the CAA Championship Friday afternoon in Richmond, Va.

Delaware took a 10-2 lead to start the game, as the Huskies trailed by eight with 15:50 left in the first half. Northeastern started the game cold on offense until the Huskies rattled off a 9-0 run with two 3-pointers from Spates and one from Davis. Spates provided energy off the bench, as the Huskies carried that momentum throughout the rest of the half. Spates added another 3-ball at the 12-minute mark to help Northeastern take an eight-point lead with nine minutes remaining in the half. Northeastern outscored Delaware, 22-8, in the last 13 minutes of the half to take 35-22 lead at halftime.

The Huskies' momentum from the first half carried into the second, as Northeastern opened up an 18-point lead after getting the first six points of the period. The Husky lead got as big as 23 thanks to a 15-5 run from Northeastern to start the half. The Huskies held Delaware scoreless for a 6:51 stretch that spanned from the end of the first into the second. Delaware was able to regroup and the Hens used a full court press and half court trap to come within 11 points of Northeastern before head coach Bill Coen called a timeout with 7:54 remaining in the game. The Huskies responded and extended their lead back up to 15 points after another Spates 3-pointer and two free throws from Janning. Delaware continued to battle hard but could never get closer than nine points. Delaware's Herb Courtney provided the second-half spark for the Hen's scoring 16 points in the half. He finished with a game-high 24.

Northeastern now faces No. 4 Drexel tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
