George Mason shot 58.5 percent for the game, led by John Vaughan and his 16 points as the Patriots topped the Northeastern University men's basketball team 80-52 Saturday afternoon at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va.
Freshman Chaisson Allen led the Huskies with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Northeastern shot only 36 percent in the first half and was unable to get around George Mason's stifling defense that did not give the Huskies many open looks.
The Huskies (6-9, 2-3 CAA) kept close with the Patriots (11-5, 3-2 CAA) early on as Allen knocked down a three to open NU's scoring and sophomore Nkem Ojougboh scored four points, including a hook shot jumper at 14:30 to give the Huskies an 11-9 lead.
However, Mason took control of the game quickly after that, ending the half on a 29-9 run. Cam Long was 5-for-6 from the field and Dre Smith was 4-for-4, including 3-for-3 from downtown. Mason shot 65 percent from the field as a team and used a 10-0 run at the end of the half to open up a 38-20 advantage at halftime.
Mason continued the run with eight straight points to start the second half. Sophomore captain Matt Janning ended that run by knocking down his first three of the game at 16:55. However, Mason proved to be too much for the Huskies as they went on a 7-0 run after Janning's three and upped the lead to 27 points, 52-25, at 13:59.
Northeastern improved in the second half by shooting 46 percent from the field, but it was not enough to surpass the Patriots. Mason connected on nine of 20 three-points shots, good for 45 percent.
In addition to Allen's 13 points, Janning added 11 points while Ojougboh had 10 points, giving him eight straight double-figure scoring games.
Smith totaled 14 points and Long had 12 points for the Patriots.
Northeastern will be back in Virginia this Wednesday, Jan. 16 when the Huskies take on William & Mary in a CAA game in Williamsburg, Va. at 7 p.m.
